Workshop Date: August 26, 2023
Workshop Audience
This workshop is designed for any Black woman navigating any educational or career path, at any level.
What You Will Learn
For this workshop, you will learn strategies for identifying needs for mentorship and sponsorship, how to know the difference, and ways to expand your professional network, with intention. In particular, this workshop will cover:
- The landscape for Black women in tech
- The weight we carry (e.g., workplace bias/stereotypes, and cultural differences)
- Getting to the leadership lounge (e.g., mentors vs sponsors, knowing the difference, and finding the support you need)
- Expanding your professional network
What You Should Expect
Our workshops provide a safe space for hands-on learning that fosters accountable goal-setting for career growth. As participants, you will learn about and apply useful strategies for building and growing your professional network with intention, according to your career goals. Black women's experiences are unique and the environments in which we work are not necessarily created for your success (McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.org, Women in the Workplace, 2022). When you attend a blackcomputeHER workshop, your contributions are celebrated, your unique experiences are recognized, and your perspectives are validated. An expert will help you define what it means to thrive.
What You Will Take Away
After this workshops, participants can expect to have tangible takeaways:
- A personal Action Plan for building your network with the right mix of mentors and sponsors
- A Certificate of Participation that can be used to leverage access to free blackcomputeHER.org content
How You Will Benefit
This workshop topic is designed with Black women tech professionals in mind and will help you tap into your personal strengths to drive your professional impact through awareness of personal/professional skills and self-branding. Expect to participate in hands-on activities that will help you explore how you engage with potential executive sponsors, mentorships, and ways to identify ways to build professional relationships that will help you have the most impact.

"Allies need to not only offer the emotional support of mentoring but also be intentional about identifying opportunities for sponsorship and using our social capital to lift up those who might otherwise go unnoticed. Sponsorship alone isn’t enough to address the deep-seated challenges associated with systemic racism, but it is a personal action that all of us can take to help make the world a more equitable place."
